Workshop "Green Mindshift in Software Development"
Sustainability in software development is not just about code. Decisions made throughout the entire software lifecycle—from requirements to UX and architecture to operations—shape the ecological footprint of digital systems. This workshop provides practical examples of how sustainability can be integrated into everyday development work. It starts with a keynote speech featuring proven methods and examples for requirements, UX design, architecture, development, testing, and operations. Participants then work in small teams on micro-challenges, i.e., measures that can be applied immediately in software development (e.g., backlog management, reviews, UX design, build and deployment context, etc.). A special focus is placed on collaboration within the company: How can sales, product owners, developers, and management work together early on to develop software sustainably? Those who wish to do so can then test the developed challenge in everyday project work for four weeks. The teams document their experiences internally or publicly, for example on LinkedIn, thereby creating visibility, involving other colleagues, and anchoring sustainable action in the organization.

Making spot instances work for sustainability
"Spot instances keep being put into the dirty “FinOps only” corner, even by prominent GreenOps players out there. This talks aims to get rid of that image and explain how spot instances can, in many ways, profit sustainability! First, we’ll take a look at the bigger picture: what are spot instances, anyway? Why are they a GreenOps tool, although a slightly tricky one? What does the energy transition require from IT systems and how do spot instances support that? Then we’ll talk about how to actually make spot instances work in a project without totally ruining your ops landscape, like they often do if you’re not careful. I’ll bring two examples: - one where a team had huge problems with them, explaining what happened, what caused those problems and how their use had to be rolled back. - one where spot instances usage was automated using Open Source tool Karpenter, showing how to do that in your project and how our customer hugely profited for over a year already. "

KI & (ökologische) Nachhaltigkeit / AI & (ecological) sustainability
"On this evening, we'll tackle the ultimate green software challenge, AI, and explore what can be done with today's capabilities to limit the damage without reducing the positive potential of the technology. Anita covers four points: 1. What are the environmental impacts of AI? 2. efficiency, sufficiency, consistency - three pillars as the basis for sustainable AI 3. Measuring & estimating - which Open Source tools can help? 4. Further resources, best practices, and tips for everyday use Afterwards, we want to exchange ideas, pool and supplement our knowledge, and learn from each other."

Masterclass on AI & Sustainability
"In this masterclass, we look at AI through the lens of sustainability: What environmental impact does it have, and what social impact does it have, especially in the digital realm? How can we estimate energy, water, and other resource consumption, and what tools can help us do so? How are emissions from the training and usage phases calculated, and what options are available to reduce them? What small tips can help in everyday use of AI, and what can I do if I build AI applications myself? These are big questions—in this session, we will go through them together, get an overview, try out tools, and understand the connections and options for action."

Shared Responsibility - How The Energy Transition Will Influence the Way we Build and Run Software
"The energy transition is in full swing: from reliable, always-on and dirty fossil fuel to volatile but clean renewable energy. Requirements for when, where and how much energy to consume will change and also affect IT. At the same time, the pressure for data center providers to decarbonize keeps rising as IT emissions and energy consumption increase at an unprecedented rate. This talk will explain why cloud providers alone won't be able to meet their climate ambitions and what role software and its architecture plays in this. You'll also learn how the future energy market will affect IT systems and what you can do today to make sure your products aren't just ready for, but can even profit from this development."

Shared responsibility - how the energy transition will influence the way we build and run software
We're in the middle of the energy transition: from reliable, always-on and dirty fossil fuel to volatile but clean renewable energy. This means that requirements for when, where and how much energy to consume will change, in IT as anywhere else. In this talk, you'll learn what cloud providers' and software architecture's roles in this are, how the future energy market will affect IT systems and what software architects can do today to make sure their products aren't just ready for, but can even profit from this development.

Sustainable Tech – how the principles of the Circular Economy can transform IT
„Reduce, Reuse, Recycle“ – the Circular Economy is gaining traction for physical products, in many cases thanks to digital innovations. What’s still under-utilized, however, is the potential for reducing waste and emissions by applying circular principles to IT itself. In this talk, we will explore what „Design out waste“ or „Keep products and materials in use“ translate to for digital products. You will learn what the environmental footprint of tech is and why it’s still such a secret. And finally, Anita will present you with some tangible, real-world examples from her work with clients that will leave you inspired to start your own Sustainable Tech journey.

Real projects - real problems to solve
Anita works as a Green Coding consultant with IT companies of different sizes. Some of them come seeking help because they have ESG based KPIs and want to reduce their IT’s emissions, others don’t even know yet that this is something they might want to do. Some run all of their workloads in the cloud, others have their own on prem data center. One thing they all seem to have in common, though: most of their devs are “sceptical” towards sustainability in IT. Anita will share insights and stories from her work: How to get clients to start Green Coding initiatives even if they’re not yet interested. Where to start looking for savings potential and how to go about estimating it. What to do if a measuring tool shows numbers that seem too small to be true. And how to make sure people not only cooperate for as long as you’re there but also keep on going after you’ve left - to guarantee this change will truely be “sustainable”.
